UPDATED FOR 2019

Gyms and fitness centers are popping up (and lately, closing) around Tallahassee almost faster than I can keep up with. If you're new to town or new to fitness then you will find this list useful.

If you find yourself googling "gyms near me", "gyms in Tallahassee", or "fitness centers", this list is for you.

It's The Serious Guide to Gyms in Tallahassee.

*DISCLAIMER: THere are some opinions listed in this article. all information was gathered through word of mouth, our own experience visiting the gyms, and speaking to management*

These gyms are all facilities whose focus is weight training and you can have a membership to work out solo. Since our gym, Seriously Strong Training, is a personal training only facility I thought it would be useful to recommend places you can take fitness into your own hands.

Obviously you should come here to learn strength training (take advantage of your free trial), but since it isn't practical for us to offer regular gym memberships you can use the following list to pick a gym after we've taught you everything you need to know to get strong (it's kind of our specialty).

I've included all the pertinent information you need to narrow down the list of places that fit your needs based on price, location, amenities, and given you my thoughts on the gym.

If you have any corrections, differing opinions, or just found this list useful leave us a comment below and share the article!

One more thing—if you're struggling to reach your goals you should consider hiring a personal trainer in Tallahassee (specifically, us). Click the link below for a free personal training trial.

1/week small group training, unlimited classes, and 24/7 access: $129
Unlimited small group training, unlimited classes, 24/7 access: $229
Gym Specialties: Functional movement
Our Take: The prices are on the higher end for Tallahassee, but with the more expensive memberships that include unlimited classes and small group training it seems very reasonable. You have access to a wide variety of training equipment and the staff was very helpful when we called for information.

Anytime Fitness

Apalachee Parkway

North Monroe
Phone Number: (850) 561-1348
Hours: 24/7
East Mahan
Phone Number: (850) 385-2348
Hours: 24/7
Membership: Call for more information regarding pricing.
Gym Specialties: General fitness.
Our Take: This is a basic gym for general fitness. Less amenities than YouFit, Planet Fitness, and Gold's. Access to one gym grants access to all Tallahassee locations. It is on the smaller side for gyms, so there is limited access to functional training equipment. Also due to it's 24/7 access, it is not staffed at all times. Hours, amenities and visitation privileges vary by location.

Atlas Fit

Phone Number: (850) 727-0652
Hours: Mon-Thu: 6am-9pm; Fri: 8am-8pm; Sat: 8am-4pm; Sun: Closed
Membership: For the most up to date prices, call or visit their website.
Basic "Atlas": $35/month
Atlas Warrior: $100/month // Includes group training 3x/week.
Atlas Warrior Unlimited: $125/month // Includes unlimited group training
Gym Specialties: "Adventure Based Fitness"
Our Take: Neat concept for a gym. It is equipped very well. This is one of the few gyms in town you can push a sled, flip a tire, lift heavy and train for obstacle races. Due to it's location and size it has limited equipment compared to big gyms, limited parking, and no locker rooms. It's a pain to get to if you aren't a student living near the school and most of it's members fit that description. Its premium membership includes a few group daily group training options.

Capital City Barbell

Phone Number: (850) 329-6850
Hours: Mon-Fri: 9am-9pm; Sat: 9am-2pm; Sun: 1pm-4pm
Membership:
12 Month Commitment: $420 ($35/month)
Month to Month: $45/month
Semester: $40/month (4 months)
Gym Specialties: Powerlifting/Olympic Weightlifting
Our Take: This gym is for intermediate-to-advanced weightlifters as it is a no frills, almost exclusively free-weight facility. Average age of members is low 20's and comprised largely of students. One of two true powerlifting friendly gyms (the other being Seminole Strength and Conditioning) in town, this one is slightly more expensive, cleaner with air conditioning, but limited hours. It doesn't have cardio equipment, showers, or a locker room.

Phone Number: (850) 512-1966
Hours: Mon: 6am-9pm; Tue: 6am-8pm; Wed: 6am-5pm; Thu: 6am-8pm; Fri: 6am-8pm; Sat: 9am-1pm; Sun: Closed
Membership: $35 Month to Month plus a$50 Enrollment. Membership includes unlimited fitness classes.
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Our Take: Comparable to Premier and FSU's Leach Center but on a smaller scale. Membership offers unlimited classes, numerous amenities, basketball, volleyball, racquetball courts, and recreational sport leagues. They have limited hours and parking can be difficult due to its downtown location.

FSU Leach

Phone Number: (850) 644-0548
Spring & Fall
Mon-Thu: 6am-10pm
Fri: 6am-9pm
Sat-Sun: 9am-9pm
Summer
Mon-Thu: 6am-10pm
Fri: 6am-9pm
Sat-Sun: 9am-9pm
Membership: Free for active students. General public needs a student sponsor.
$35 per month for alumni
$25 per month for faculty
$60 per semester for returning students not currently enrolled
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Our Take: The Leach is incredibly well equipped. Racquetball courts, basketball courts, pool, sauna, steam room, hot tubs, olympic weightlifting, group classes, locker rooms, showers, everything. It's only rival is Premier. Parking at times can be a pain, and the gym is incredibly crowded much of the time. We only recommend this gym if you can workout at off-peak hours, or you are currently a student living on or very near campus. Still, aim for off-peak hours.

Gold's Gym

Phone Number: (850) 201-9712
Hours: Mon-Thurs: 24hrs; Fri: 12AM-9PM; Sat-Sun: 9AM-7PM
Membership:
Paid in full: $200-$400.
Basic: $25/month. Up to $99 enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. No classes included. No guests.
Platinum: $35/month. Up to $99 enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. Unlimited guest privileges if they have a local Tallahassee ID.
Gym Specialties: General fitness
Our Take: Gold's Gym is a Tallahassee staple. Gold's is not powerlifting/strength training friendly and can be very crowded including many "bros". If you're looking for powerlifting/olympic weightlifting, head over to Seminole Strength and Conditioning, or Capital City Barbell. Gold's is a well equipped health club that includes saunas, tanning and a women's fitness center. As a student I left the Leach in search of greener pastures at Gold's, and started my personal training career there. During my time working there the sales team and management were aggressive, borderline deceitful at times, and very sales driven when it comes to consultations and pushing memberships.

Kinetix

Northside
Phone Number: (850) 597-8581
Hours: Mon-Fri: 4am-10pm; Sat: 8am-5pm; Sun: 9am-5pm
Southwood
Phone Number: (850) 765-4047
Hours: 24/7
Membership:
Silver: $19.99/Month. 1-2 year contracts. $129 enrollment fee. $49 annual fee. Must pay remainder of contract to cancel. Classes not included.
Gold: $29.99/Month. $99 enrollment fee. $49 annual fee. Must pay remainder of contract to cancel. 24/7 gym access. Classes included
Platinum: $42.99/Month. $99 enrollment fee. $49 annual fee. Must pay remainder of contract to cancel. 24/7 gym access. Classes included.
Gym Specialties: General fitness.
Our Take: The ultimate middle-aged gym. With one nestled in Southwood & the other in Killearn, Kinetix is geared towards Tallahasseeans that have made their way to the suburbs. The gyms are clean & newer. They normally only do long term contracts, and can be crowded at lunch and after work. Group classes are included in premium memberships.

Momentum Fitness

Phone Number: (850) 385-9712
Hours: Mon-Thu: 5am-10pm; Fri: 5am-9pm; Sat: 7am-7pm; Sun: 9am-7pm
Membership:
Paid in full: $200-$400.
Basic: month to month. $25/month. Up to $99 enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. No classes included. No guests.
Platinum: Month to month. $35/month. Up to $99 enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. Classes included. Unlimited guest privileges.
Gym Specialties: General fitness
Our Take: Momentum used to be the Gold's Gym located on Capital Circle but was rebranded by it's owner after he split ways with the owner of the Pensacola Gold's Gym. As far as we can tell nothing else has changed. Staff is similar to the Gold's on Pensacola and the gym lacks powerlifting friendly equipment. It is a well equipped health club that includes saunas, tanning, a women's fitness center & cardio cinema.

Planet Fitness

Apalachee Parkway/Capital Circle SE
Phone Number: (850) 597-7375
Hours: 24/7
North Monroe
Phone Number: (850) 329-6091
Hours: 24/7
Membership: White Card: $10/month + $5 down. $39 annual fee. Month to month commitment. No guest privileges. Limited access to amenities.
Black Card: $19.99/Month + $0 down. $39 annual fee. Year long commitment with a $58 cancellation fee. Unlimited guest privileges. Unlimited access to all amenities.
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Our Take: Planet Fitness is known for being a casual gym. They have a "Lunk Alarm" for anyone they deem is being intimidating or douchey. There are no barbells so no real strength training is happening here. That means no deadlifts, no real squats, no real bench pressing. You can use the smith machine to perform the movements but you will not get the benefits of free-weight training because the bar is on a fixed path. This is a large chain and access to one grants you access to all so travel workouts are easy. I have a membership here because they offer a lot that my facility doesn't: tanning, hydromassage beds, massage chairs, machines, cardio equipment, and travel gym privileges. It's just a few minutes from us and cheap. Sometimes it's nice to get out of the gym, hit some machines, and get bronzed.

Premier Health & Fitness Center

Phone Number: (850) 431-2348
Hours: Mon-Thu: 5am-10pm; Fri: 5am-9pm; Sat: 7am-7pm; Sun: 10am-6pm
Membership:  $50.51 + tax monthly for a year contract, $150 termination fee
$45-60 enrollment fee
$62.88 for month to month
$7.00 per guest
90 classes per week included
Gym Specialties: General Fitness
Our Take: This is the Leach for grownups. It's on the north side of town so it can be a bit of a pain to get to for much of Tallahassee therefore it's usual crowd is those living in the Killearn area. Overall, it is a very well-equipped health club. This may be the most expensive gym in town. It includes a heated pool, saunas, steam room, basketball court, and indoor track.

Seminole Strength and Conditioning

Phone Number: (352) 504-5567
Hours: Staffed Mon-Fri: 7am-9pm; Sat: 10am-2pm; Sun: 12pm-3pm
24/7 Keycode Access
Membership: Single Month: $50
Month to month $35/month, 3 month minimum. No enrollment fees.
Bootcamp classes offered.
Gym Specialties: Powerlifting, bodybuilding, and strongman training.
Our Take: This is the ultimate "no frills" gym in town. It has tons of powerlifting & strongman equipment so if heavy lifting if your goal this may be the gym for you. The owner is the world record holder for the bench press so he knows a thing or two about strength equipment. It is located on the north west side of town which can be out of the way for some Tallahasseans. It has showers and daily lockers. During summer months it can get hot due to the lack of A/C.

YouFit

Mahan
Phone Number: (850) 241-1300
Hours: Mon-Fri: 24 Hours; Sat-Sun: 8am-8pm
North Monroe
Phone Number: (850) 241-7777
Hours: Mon-Fri: 24 Hours; Sat-Sun: 8am-8pm
Membership: White Card: $10/month. $10 enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. Month to month contract. No class privileges.
Lime Card: $19.99/Month. No enrollment fee. $39.99 annual fee. Month to month contract. Unlimited guest privileges.
Gym Specialties: General fitness
Our Take: YouFit is in the same wheelhouse as Gold's, Planet Fitness, and Kinetix. It's a health club, nothing more, nothing less. The membership prices are reasonable and the gym is perfect if you just want a place to "stay in shape". Buying a premium membership at one location gives you access to all locations including classes and guest privileges. There isn't a lot of free weights and barbell equipment.
